Tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq announces retirement after two-decade career

Pakistani tennis legend Aisam-ul-Haq officially announced his retirement on Monday during the inauguration of the ATP Challenger Cup in the federal capital, bringing an end to a remarkable two-decade career.

Speaking at the ceremony, Aisam reflected on his journey under the spotlight, acknowledging the applause and admiration from fans and fellow players. He credited his parents for being his guiding force, saying their support, sacrifices, and encouragement shaped his path to success.

Aisam also expressed gratitude to his longtime coaches, mentors, and fellow athletes who helped nurture his talent and contributed to his growth as one of Pakistan’s most accomplished tennis players. He recounted that his initial coach, Haseeb Aslam, had initially refused to train him, but ultimately agreed following the insistence of Aisam’s mother.

Highlighting the role of sports media, Aisam said Pakistan’s media had consistently showcased his journey from the very beginning, helping inspire the next generation of athletes. The ceremony featured formal introductions of both international and local players attending the ATP Challenger Cup.

Aisam-ul-Haq leaves behind a legacy as Pakistan’s most prominent tennis player, having competed at the highest international levels and inspired countless young athletes across the country.
