Pakistan is hosting its first-ever International Quran Recitation (Qirat) Competition, officials announced on Monday, marking a historic milestone for the country.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Muhammad Yousuf called the day “historic and blessed,” saying that by the grace of Allah, Pakistan has been honoured to host the global event.
The minister highlighted efforts initiated during the previous government under former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to reform the Ministry of Religious Affairs, noting that the current administration under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has continued these initiatives. He cited recent activities such as the Scholars and Sheikhs Council Convention, the establishment of the Nizam-e-Salat system, and the launch of the Quran Board.
Sardar Yousuf emphasized the significance of the Quran as a source of guidance and said the competition is an opportunity to promote both spiritual and educational development. “Over 40 countries are participating in this event, which is a great blessing for us. It will help us gain success in this world and the Hereafter,” he said.
The minister also stressed the importance of learning Arabic, the language of the Quran, so that participants can read, understand, and implement its teachings. He expressed hope that the event would encourage broader Arabic education across Pakistan.
The international competition brings together Qaris from across the globe, aiming to foster a deeper connection with the Quran and enhance Pakistan’s role as a centre for Islamic learning and recitation.
