Muhammad Usman has been appointed head coach of the national hockey team for the Bangladesh tour after a dispute between the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and head coach Tahir Zaman led to his withdrawal just days before the series.
According to team sources, players expressed disappointment over the coach’s absence ahead of such an important series, saying that uncertainty until a few hours before departure negatively affected the squad’s morale.
Sources said the team had been benefiting from Tahir Zaman’s presence, but he should have shown flexibility in handling player discipline matters. Instead of insisting on dropping two players for reporting late to camp, a fine could have been imposed, they added.
Players believe personal differences should have been set aside for the national interest, especially before a crucial qualifying series. Tahir Zaman had called for action against two players for late arrival at the training camp.
PHF officials, however, rejected the demand to drop the players and instead directed that all late-arriving players be fined. The disagreement escalated, leading to Tahir Zaman stepping down, and Muhammad Usman was given charge as head coach for the Bangladesh tour.
Sources further revealed that Tahir Zaman will also not be available for the upcoming Spain tour. The PHF is considering hiring a foreign coach for the Pro Hockey League.
Pakistan and Bangladesh will play the opening match of the series on November 13 in Dhaka. The winner of the series will qualify for the World Cup Qualifiers.
