40% Pakistanis support second marriage, men more likely to approve: Gallup Survey

A recent Gallup Pakistan survey reveals that 40 percent of Pakistanis are in favor of second marriages under certain conditions, while 60 percent oppose it.

The survey shows that men are more likely than women to support second marriages, with 50 percent of men approving compared to 30 percent of women. However, a majority—72 percent of respondents—believe it is difficult or impossible to treat both wives fairly in such marriages. Among those who view fair treatment as impossible, 59 percent were men.

When asked under what circumstances a second marriage should be allowed, 39 percent said it is acceptable if there are no children, 15 percent cited the ability to ensure fairness between both wives, and 10 percent said the first wife’s permission should be necessary.
