PM urges regional peace and development at Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized that peace and stability are the foundations of sustainable development, highlighting the ongoing global conflicts as a reminder of the importance of security. He said Pakistan has demonstrated its readiness to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs and stressed that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is key to regional connectivity, growth, and prosperity.

Addressing the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference on Tuesday, the Prime Minister urged the Afghan interim government to take effective action against the TTP and other militant groups. He noted that no country can achieve development in isolation and reaffirmed that Pakistan is implementing comprehensive economic reforms to ensure inclusive growth.

Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the participation of international speakers, parliamentarians, and delegates, calling the conference an honor for Pakistan. He praised Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani and ISC Founder Chairman Eknath Dhakal for their efforts in shaping the forum. He highlighted that the conference theme, “Peace, Security, and Development,” is especially important for Pakistan.

Reflecting on Pakistan’s history, the Prime Minister said the country has consistently promoted negotiations and diplomacy since 1947. He stressed that peace and security are essential for long-term national and regional development. Recalling recent security challenges, he noted that Pakistani forces successfully repelled unprovoked aggression from the eastern border in May, demonstrating the country’s commitment to defending its territory.

He emphasized that Pakistan believes in a peaceful neighborhood and continues to work toward that goal. However, militant groups inside and across Afghanistan continue to threaten regional security. He praised efforts by countries like Turkey and Qatar in facilitating dialogue between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban. He urged Afghanistan to take decisive action against groups like TTP and highlighted Pakistan’s readiness to work with Kabul on practical solutions to security concerns.

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to human rights and international justice, referencing support for Gaza, Jammu and Kashmir, and other oppressed peoples. He stressed that global conflicts often arise from poverty, inequality, and injustice, underlining the need for development measures to counter instability.

Domestically, he highlighted comprehensive reforms aimed at inclusive growth, strengthening institutions, and empowering women and youth. He emphasized support for SMEs, increased financing opportunities, and digital skills development for women to drive economic participation and innovation.

On the international front, Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan is working with global financial institutions and development partners on financial reforms, climate resilience, and investment promotion to secure a prosperous future. He concluded by stressing that no nation can develop alone, and nations must unite for collective security and lasting peace.

He called on parliamentarians to act as custodians of public trust and to contribute with integrity and dedication to the nation’s progress. The Prime Minister expressed hope that the conference discussions will guide collaborative efforts toward sustainable development and regional stability.
