Atlanta (Lord Media): Argentina secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals by defeating Egypt 3-2 in the pre-quarter-final match. However, Argentine star Lionel Messi set an undesirable world record during the game.
In the match against Egypt, Messi missed his fourth career World Cup penalty, marking his second missed penalty in the ongoing tournament. This makes Messi the player with the most missed penalties in FIFA World Cup history.
Argentina was trailing 0-1 when they were awarded a penalty, presenting a prime opportunity to equalize. However, Messi’s shot to the right was brilliantly saved by Egypt’s goalkeeper, Mostafa Shabir.
Earlier in the tournament, Messi also missed a penalty against Austria during the group stage. His other missed penalties include one against Iceland in the 2018 World Cup and one against Poland in the 2022 World Cup.
Following the match, the Egyptian head coach claimed it was clearly a fixed match, stating that the whole world witnessed it.
