The Supreme Court (SC) granted permission for incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to present his arguments in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendment case via video link.
A larger bench of the SC, chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa and including Justices Amin-ud-Din Khan, Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Athar Minallah, and Hasan Azhar Rizvi, convened to hear the federal government’s intra-court appeal.
This appeal challenged the SC’s 2023 ruling, which invalidated certain NAB amendments and reinstated corruption cases against public officials that had been closed following the amendments. The court instructed the attorney general to ensure the functionality of the video link and adjourned the case until May 16.
In 2022, the former Prime Minister announced his intention to contest the amendments to the National Accountability Bill in the SC, arguing that the proposed changes would weaken the anti-corruption body’s ability to prosecute “corrupt politicians.”
During a press conference in Islamabad, the former PTI chairman called for the imprisonment of current leaders for “shamefully” passing the amendments to the NAB laws, stating, “They should be put in jail for their shamelessness. Nobody can pass such laws the way this government did,” Imran declared at the time.
