Climate change is a social and economic crisis as much as an environmental one. Extreme weather events disproportionately impact low-income communities worldwide, widening the wealth gap.
Developing nations like Pakistan, despite minimal contribution to climate change, bear the brunt of floods, heatwaves, and other disasters. The 2022 floods remain a fresh wound for many rural Pakistanis.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) recent report, “The Unjust Climate,” underscores this disparity. It studied rural communities in 24 countries, including Pakistan, revealing how extreme weather widens the income gap. Poor rural households lose 5% of their income annually compared to wealthier households. Female-headed families suffer the most, losing up to 8% (around $37 billion globally). Every flood event reduces on-farm income for poor families by 2.4%, crop value by 1.1%, and off-farm income by 1.5%, compared to better-off households. Floods and droughts disproportionately burden women. Their work hours increase, while income opportunities decrease. This exacerbates existing gender inequalities in childcare and domestic work.
Despite this evidence, the plight of rural communities is often overlooked in climate policy.
