UK think tank calls for rules on AI news sources

A British think tank has raised concerns about the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the news industry, urging the government to implement rules that ensure fair payment and transparency for AI-generated news.

In a report released this week, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) highlighted that AI tools are increasingly becoming the primary way the public consumes news, fundamentally reshaping the news ecosystem.

The report warned that major AI companies are emerging as new “gatekeepers” of online information, controlling how citizens access news and shaping public opinion. It noted that some official outlets news stuff are insufficiently cited by leading AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, raising concerns about the diversity of perspectives available to users.

“Disproportionate use of some outlets over others risks narrowing the range of perspectives users are exposed to, potentially amplifying certain viewpoints or agendas without users’ knowledge,” the report said.

To address these issues, IPPR outlined three key policy recommendations. First, governments should require AI companies to pay for the news they use through fair payment schemes and collective licensing deals that include a wide range of publishers.

Second, AI companies should introduce standardized “nutrition labels for AI-generated news, allowing users to see the sources and methodology behind the information.

Third, public funding should be used to protect independent news outlets in the AI era, ensuring diversity and credibility in reporting.

The report emphasized that swift government action is essential to establish a healthy AI news environment before further damage occurs to the global news ecosystem.
