Balochistan student wins global award for banana stem fibre innovation

A student from Balochistan, Muhammad Sarfraz, has won the “Discover Natural Fibre Initiative” award for developing natural fibre from banana stems, bringing international recognition to Pakistan.

The award was announced during the Heimtextil international home textiles exhibition held in Frankfurt, Germany. More than 100 research institutions, companies and academic organisations from around the world participated in the competition.

According to organisers, Muhammad Sarfraz’s project attracted attention due to its environmental significance and commercial potential. The young researcher spent four years developing a high-quality natural fibre extracted from banana stems, an agricultural by-product often treated as waste.

The initiative was praised for offering a sustainable alternative to conventional fibres while also presenting opportunities for industrial and commercial use.

After receiving the award, Muhammad Sarfraz dedicated the honour to his teachers and the talented youth of Balochistan. He said the achievement reflects the potential of young researchers from underdeveloped regions when provided with opportunities and support.

The success of the Baloch student has been widely welcomed, with officials and academics calling it a moment of pride for Pakistan and an encouraging sign for innovation-driven research in the country.
