LONDON (Lord Media): The British government has announced plans to amend immigration laws to facilitate the deportation of Shabir Ahmed, the convicted ringleader of a child sexual exploitation gang. Ahmed was sentenced to 22 years in prison in 2012 for crimes involving the sexual exploitation and abuse of underage girls. He was recently released under the UK’s early release program and remains under strict supervision.<\/p>\n
Ahmed holds dual citizenship of the UK and Pakistan, but an existing immigration law poses a barrier to his deportation. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that the government will amend Section 7 of the 1971 Immigration Act through the Immigration and Asylum Bill, affecting protections for Commonwealth citizens.<\/p>\n
The Home Office noted that deportation requires the consent of the relevant countries. Ahmed spent the first 14 years of his life in Pakistan, making it a potential destination for his deportation. Ahmed claims to have renounced his Pakistani citizenship in 2012.<\/p>\n
British authorities are currently reviewing the case. Over 100 individuals have been convicted in the Rochdale and Oldham sexual exploitation scandal.
