ISLAMABAD (Lord Media): The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to hold another consultative meeting in 15 days to set the date for local government elections in 23 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The meeting, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, was attended by members of the Election Commission, the Secretary Election Commission, Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Secretary Local Government, and other relevant officials.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, it was revealed that the Election Commission has completed the delimitation process in 23 districts, making it essential to determine the election date. The Chief Election Commissioner emphasized that under Article 140A of the Constitution of Pakistan, holding local government elections is a constitutional requirement, and according to Section 219(4) of the Elections Act, it is the legal responsibility of the Election Commission to conduct elections within 120 days of the expiration of local government terms.<\/p>\n
The terms of local governments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ended on March 14 and June 19, 2026, and the Election Commission has completed its preparations for the elections. Officials stated that consultations with the provincial government are ongoing to finalize the election date. The Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa informed the meeting that the consultative letter from the Election Commission has been promptly sent to the provincial cabinet, and the provincial government is ready to provide administrative support for the elections.<\/p>\n
