LONDON (Lord Media): Britain has announced plans to ban Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) under emergency legislation targeting foreign state-backed activities.<\/p>\n
The UK Home Office stated that the measures are part of new legislation to address threats linked to foreign governments. The Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right and the Russian-linked GRU Volunteer Corps will also be banned.<\/p>\n
If approved by parliament this week, individuals affiliated with these groups or involved in sabotage acts, like arson, could face life imprisonment.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the government would prevent any foreign power from spreading fear, violence, or division in Britain, asserting that the country would not be a safe haven for such operations.<\/p>\n
The Home Office highlighted that the legislation would enhance the government\u2019s ability to counter state-backed threats, providing police and law enforcement with more powers against these organisations.<\/p>\n
Supporting or assisting the banned groups would become a criminal offence, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.<\/p>\n
Authorities noted that the measures would facilitate prosecuting individuals cooperating with these organisations, leading to longer prison terms.<\/p>\n
The British government has already imposed sanctions on Iran, including restrictions on the IRGC and over 550 Iran-linked individuals and entities.<\/p>\n
