Dubai (Lord Media): Rising tensions between Iran and the US in the Strait of Hormuz are impacting global maritime trade and energy supply. Several oil and gas tankers have altered their routes, while thousands of maritime workers remain stranded in the Persian Gulf. Experts attribute the current crisis to flaws in the memorandum of understanding between the two nations.<\/p>\n
Following Iranian attacks, four oil and gas tankers abandoned attempts to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Three tankers, Al Ghariya, Duhail, and Al Ruwais, managed by Qatar Energy, were heading empty to Qatar’s Ras Laffan export facility but changed their course.<\/p>\n
In response to the recent attack, Qatar summoned Iran’s deputy ambassador to lodge a protest, labeling the attack a violation of international maritime law and demanding Iran cease such actions immediately.<\/p>\n
Despite the US-Iran tension, some oil tankers continue to transit the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel Mercury Hope crossed with 2 million barrels of oil, while the Japanese oil tanker Tenjin also passed through the route.<\/p>\n
According to maritime analytics firm Kpler, there was a slight improvement in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz on July 7. However, security concerns and sanctions have exacerbated maritime safety issues.<\/p>\n
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with significant volumes of global oil and liquefied natural gas passing through. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the United Nations International Maritime Organization, stated that approximately 6,000 maritime workers are trapped in the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n
Experts suggest that weaknesses in the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran contribute to the current crisis.
