The price of flour in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has increased once again amid reported disruptions in the interprovincial supply of wheat and flour from Punjab.<\/p>\n
According to industry sources, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa\u2019s flour mills heavily depend on wheat supplies from Punjab due to a significant production gap within the province. Officials note that KP produces around 1.2 million metric tons of wheat annually, while its total requirement stands at approximately 5.2 million metric tons, leaving a shortfall of nearly 4 million metric tons that is typically met through imports from Punjab.<\/p>\n
The flour mills association stated that interruptions in the supply chain from Punjab have forced mills to purchase wheat at higher prices, which has directly impacted retail flour rates in the market.<\/p>\n
As a result, flour prices across the province have recorded a noticeable increase. Over the past week alone, the price of a 20-kilogram flour bag has risen from Rs2,200 to Rs2,400, placing additional financial pressure on low- and middle-income households.<\/p>\n
Industry representatives warn that continued supply constraints could further destabilize local food prices if the situation persists.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved the procurement of 225,000 metric tons of wheat and released funds for the purchase. Officials have also written to the federal and Punjab governments, terming restrictions on interprovincial wheat movement unconstitutional and demanding their immediate removal to ensure smooth supply across the country.<\/p>\n
