The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to become the largest edition in the history of international football, with an expanded format, increased prize money, and a record number of participating teams.<\/p>\n
The tournament will be jointly hosted by United States, Mexico, and Canada, beginning on 11 June 2026, and will feature 48 national teams for the first time in the competition\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
Defending champions Argentina national football team will enter the tournament aiming to retain their title, following their triumph in the 2022 edition.<\/p>\n
The expansion marks a major shift from the previous format, where 32 teams participated in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Under the new structure, several nations including Jordan, Uzbekistan, Cape Verde, and Cura\u00e7ao are set to make their debut appearances on football\u2019s biggest stage.<\/p>\n
Alongside expansion in teams and matches, FIFA has also significantly increased the financial scale of the tournament. According to details, the total prize pool has been set at approximately $871 million, nearly double that of the previous edition.<\/p>\n
Teams will receive enhanced financial support, with $2.5 million allocated for preparation and $10 million for qualification. This means each qualified team will receive around $12.5 million even before the tournament begins, with additional earnings based on performance.<\/p>\n
The champions will receive $53.5 million in prize money, compared to $42 million awarded to Argentina in 2022. The runner-up will earn $36.5 million, while third and fourth place teams will receive $32.5 million and $30.5 million respectively.<\/p>\n
Teams finishing between 5th and 8th place will each earn $22.5 million, while those ranked 9th to 16th will receive $18.5 million. Teams placed between 17th and 32nd will get $14.5 million, and those finishing from 33rd to 48th will each secure $12.5 million.<\/p>\n
The tournament will also feature an expanded schedule, with a total of 104 matches compared to 64 in the 2022 edition, making it the most extensive World Cup in history in terms of fixtures.<\/p>\n
