Pakistan has initiated a major reform effort in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector with the launch of work on the country\u2019s first-ever National WASH Accounts, aimed at establishing a unified national database for climate-resilient and sustainable delivery of services.<\/p>\n
The initiative has been launched by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination in collaboration with the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, with technical support from WaterAid, the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund. It seeks to address longstanding data gaps that have hindered evidence-based planning, financing and coordination at the national level.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the first time Pakistan is moving towards a single national framework for tracking the state of water and sanitation services across the country,\u201d said Mohammad Saleem Shaikh, the ministry\u2019s media spokesperson and WASH policy advocacy specialist, describing the initiative as a significant step toward evidence-based governance.<\/p>\n
He said the proposed system would enable federal and provincial authorities to generate standardized and timely data to track investments, monitor service delivery and oversee the utilization of public funds.<\/p>\n
The National WASH Accounts will provide a comprehensive overview of water and sanitation services across the country, helping policymakers identify underserved areas and allocate resources more effectively.<\/p>\n
According to the ministry, the initiative is designed to strengthen coordination among provinces while improving oversight of projects and expenditures. It will also incorporate modern technologies, including artificial intelligence-based tools, to enhance data collection, verification, analysis and reporting.<\/p>\n
Federal Secretary for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Aisha Humera Moriani described the initiative as \u201ca turning point in Pakistan\u2019s WASH governance.\u201d<\/p>\n
She noted that fragmented and outdated data has long undermined effective planning and resource allocation. A unified national system, she said, will allow all provinces to operate on a common evidence base, enabling better identification of gaps and more targeted investments.<\/p>\n
Ms. Moriani emphasized that the initiative would strengthen transparency and accountability while supporting the development of climate-resilient water and sanitation services amid growing environmental challenges. She added that advanced digital tools and artificial intelligence would modernize Pakistan\u2019s WASH data infrastructure and enable more efficient reporting.<\/p>\n
She further stated that reliable data is essential for climate resilience, as it provides clarity on access to clean water and sanitation, highlights service gaps, and tracks the use of public resources. The National WASH Accounts, she said, would shift policymaking from reactive approaches to proactive, evidence-based planning.<\/p>\n
The initiative is also expected to enhance Pakistan\u2019s reporting on Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring universal access to safe water and sanitation.
