The America-class amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli serves as the flagship for the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, which together consist of about 3,500 personnel along with transport and strike fighter aircraft, as well as amphibious and tactical assets.<\/p>\n
The deployment comes amid a broader U.S. military buildup linked to the ongoing war involving Iran. Amphibious forces are capable of conducting both naval strikes and ground operations and are typically used for rapid deployments, including securing strategic locations, evacuations, or potential coastal assaults, according to international media reports.<\/p>\n
The The Wall Street Journal reported that the Pentagon is also considering deploying up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the region, which would provide the U.S. President Donald Trump with expanded military options beyond diplomatic engagement.<\/p>\n
The prospective force may include infantry and armored units and would add to approximately 5,000 Marines and thousands of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division already positioned in the region.<\/p>\n
