In coastal regions such as Karachi, fishing remains one of the oldest and most vital sources of livelihood\u2014yet one increasingly burdened by economic pressure, environmental threats, and uncertainty.<\/p>\n
Every year on 21 November, World Fisheries Day draws attention to the role of fishing communities and the challenges they face. For Karachi\u2019s coastal population, the deep sea is both a workplace and a lifeline. Fishermen often spend a day, a week, and sometimes months at sea to support their families, braving dangerous conditions that put their safety at constant risk.<\/p>\n
Despite their sacrifices, many fishermen say they remain trapped in hardship, with little clarity about their future. Those who fish in both freshwater and marine waters confront multiple issues\u2014from dwindling fish stocks and rising costs to limited market access and falling purchasing prices.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the occasion, Fatima Majeed Motani, Chairperson of the Fishermen\u2019s Cooperative Society, acknowledged that the sector faces \u201cserious threats,\u201d stressing that efforts are underway to improve fishermen\u2019s incomes and stabilise the industry. She noted that meaningful support and better regulation are essential for sustaining the fragile ecosystem and improving the lives of those dependent on it.<\/p>\n
Pakistan meets a significant portion of its domestic demand for fish, shrimp, and other aquatic species through local catch. A substantial volume is also exported, contributing to the national economy. However, fishermen frequently complain about unfair pricing, claiming they do not receive adequate compensation despite the high risks and long hours involved.<\/p>\n
