May 9 Riots: A blot on PTI’s face forever

by M.J. Bhatti

In the annals of Pakistan’s political history, May 9, 2023, will forever be remembered as a day marred by violence, chaos, and a blatant attack on the democratic fabric of the nation. The events of that fateful day, commonly referred to as the “May 9 riots,” not only shook the foundations of the country’s governance but also left an indelible stain on the reputation of the former ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party of Imran Khan.

The May 9 riots were started after the arrest of PTI founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan from the premises of the Islamabad High Court. The manhandling of Khan during the arrest made his followers angry who were already annoyed over the attempt on his life in Wazirabad in 2022.

As news of Khan’s detention spread, widespread protests erupted across the country, orchestrated by fervent PTI supporters who vehemently opposed Khan’s detention. However, what began as peaceful demonstrations soon descended into a frenzy of violence and destruction and acts of vandalism, as mobs unleashed havoc on the streets of major cities, torched vehicles, and attacked government buildings.

The chaos spread like wildfire, engulfing urban centers and plunging the nation into turmoil, including Lahore, Faisalabad and Peshawar. The situation deteriorated further as rioters clashed with law enforcement agencies.

The uncontrolled mobs attacked army installations, especially the Core Commander House in Lahore, the intelligence agency office in Faisalabad, a military fort in Peshawar and several others in different areas. The worst of all was the destruction and humiliation of the memorials of the nation’s martyrs and war heroes.

The sheer scale of the mayhem and the brazenness of the attacks laid bare the fragility of Pakistan’s democratic institutions and underscored the challenges of maintaining law and order in a politically charged environment. Moreover, the inability of the then government to swiftly quell the violence raised serious questions about its capacity to uphold the rule of law and protect its citizens.

In the aftermath of the riots, the PTI faced severe criticism from both domestic and international quarters for its perceived failure to control its workers and supporters. Many accused PTI of orchestrating the unrest in a desperate bid to save its leader from facing the cases under different charges, tarnishing its image as a champion of democracy and accountability.

The repercussions of the May 9 riots continue to reverberate through Pakistani society, with lasting implications for PTI and the country as a whole. Moreover, the riots tarnished PTI’s image as a party committed to democratic principles and peaceful protest. Instead, it portrayed PTI as a faction willing to resort to violence and disruption to achieve its political goals, undermining its credibility and legitimacy in the eyes of many.

The May 9 riots also had significant economic consequences, as businesses suffered losses due to property damage and disruption of commercial activities. The instability caused by the riots further dampened investor confidence and hindered Pakistan’s economic development.

Following the May 9 riots, perhaps most damning of all was the revelation of alleged human rights abuses during the crackdown on protesters and the people allegedly involved in the riots. Reports of excessive use of force and arbitrary arrests raised alarm bells among human rights organizations and drew condemnation from the international community.

Calls for a transparent inquiry into the May 9 events and accountability for those responsible grew louder. However, the PTI’s tepid response and apparent reluctance to hold itself accountable only fueled suspicions of complicity and cover-up, further staining its already tarnished reputation.

As the dust settled, one thing became abundantly clear: the events of that day would forever remain a black blot on the PTI’s face. No amount of damage control or political maneuvering could erase the memory of the senseless violence and chaos unleashed by the party’s supporters.

In the months since the riots, Pakistan has witnessed sporadic outbreaks of political unrest, serving as grim reminders of the fragility of its democratic experiment. However, the lessons of May 9, continue to loom large, serving as a sobering reminder of the dangers of unchecked power and the imperative of safeguarding the principles of democracy, justice, and accountability.

Moving forward and rebuilding trust with the institutions and restoring its reputation, the PTI must learn from the mistakes of the past and take proactive steps to prevent such incidents from happening again. This requires a commitment to upholding democratic principles, respecting the rule of law, and fostering dialogue and reconciliation among political stakeholders.

I hope that the PTI’s leaders, workers and supporters, and above all Imran Khan while sitting in jail would have understood the consequences of political extremism and the importance of peaceful and democratic means of dissent.

In conclusion, the May 9 riots represent a dark chapter in Pakistan’s history and a stain on PTI’s legacy. As the country grapples with the aftermath of the violence, it must redouble its efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions, promote accountability, and uphold the rule of law. Only then can Pakistan move forward and ensure that such tragic events are never repeated.
