The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections have been postponed due to severe weather conditions affecting the region.
According to the Election Commission, an all-parties conference was held to review the situation, during which a consensus emerged to defer the elections in view of the prevailing weather. The decision was formally announced after the meeting.
Officials said that Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz supported holding the elections on January 24. However, 13 other political parties opposed proceeding with the general elections under the current conditions.
The Election Commission stated that a new date for the elections would be announced later after assessing weather conditions and logistical feasibility.
The all-parties conference was convened specifically to consider the impact of worsening weather on the electoral process, following which the postponement decision was taken.
